The Best Kitchen Designs that Combine Aesthetics with Functionality

Updated: Jul 10, 2020

3.   Practical Built-in Featurestchens are often referred to as the heart of the home. After all, it’s where we make our food for our families, friends, and often the place we turn to when we have to entertain guests. But the thing about most kitchens these days is that they’re smaller than before.

But that’s not to say you can’t have a beautiful and functional kitchen in your Space! That’s why we’re taking a look at some major kitchen design inspiration that we can help you easily bring to your home today!

1.   Keep it Versatile with Light Colours

Light and neutral colour palettes are the basis for many kitchen designs because of how it can make a room look and feel more spacious, airy and light! It also gives you a versatile backdrop to play with other home decor elements, and bring colours and textures in with your fixtures without overwhelming a small kitchen space.

A classic option would be to go with a white on white colour palette, but we also love throwing in beiges, light woody tones for a more naturalistic feel, or even cream or grey marble detailing for a more classic and elegant touch.

2.  Fun & Functional Statement Worktops

With limited space available, you want to make the most of every surface you have, especially your work surface! Many HDB kitchens these days use their work surfaces as makeshift dining areas as well, so thinking about the material of your worktop is something you shouldn’t overlook.

Quartz marble lookalike makes for a great work surface because it’s easy to clean, affordable and also very stylish, but the same can be said for concrete styles that bring out a more modern industrial interior design.

Work surfaces are also a major element in your kitchen, so use it to make a visual impact as well. Contrast the colour of your cabinets with your work surface to add dimension to your space, or have built-in fixtures of different materials and textures for that extra flourish!

3.   Practical Built-in Features

Many people think a few rustic details in their kitchen would put a wrench in their modern and minimalist designs, but that’s actually not the case! In fact, this brings out a slight Scandinavian design, combining sleek modern shapes with earthy and natural materials. Things such as baskets and wooden floors can be considered especially since both practical and aesthetic!

Warm and soft LED lights can also be used to line your kitchen space to emulate that rustic feel as you step into your kitchen. After all, nothing says home like coming back to that warmth coupled with a delicious home-cooked meal.

4.   Style Things Up With Easy to Clean Subway Tiles

Subway tiles are a classic way to add some dimension and texture to your kitchen without taking up any space. Even plain white subway tiles can bring a completely new feel to your kitchen and can complement modern, minimal and industrial styles as well.

Another bonus to subway tiles is that their laminated surfaces are easy to clean, and are easy to maintain. So despite the mess you make in the kitchen, it’ll always look pristine after a quick clean up! And if you’ve got an open concept kitchen, the introduction of subway tiles can visually demarcate an area without the use of partitions, doors or walls!

5.   Dual Purpose Solutions with Style

The cabinets can often take up the most space in a kitchen, so why not make your kitchen cabinets serve as pieces to store your crockery and utensils, and an extension of your home interior design!

For instance, we threw on a shade of white followed by an accent colour, which this time, we chose to be black to fit this minimalist theme. Visually, it’s strong and stunning and really gives a modern vibe if you’re going for that. This home also chose to combine their dining and living area, so keeping to this simple yet sophisticated colour palette allowed us to have two rooms together without it looking overwhelming.

Besides cabinets, we installed a hanging rack above the sink as a slim and visually pleasing drying solution for your bulkier items such as pots and pans. When it comes to small spaces, it’s all about concealing what you can and making your furnishings work for you. When you think of dual-purpose, don’t just think functionality, think aesthetically as well!
